December Meeting is our Annual Holiday Party

This year it is being held at the Springs Preserve, Sunday December 11, 2011 at 2PM. If you are attending, please contact our Secretary, Ramona Lesley as soon as possible so that we can be sure to have enough of everything -- food, space, etc.

The newsletter has more details on the party and some more beautiful images. Some fine specimen plants will likely be club gifts to members.

The next meeting of the Cactus and Succulent Society will take place in a meeting room of the Desert Living Center at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve on Sunday November, 13, 2011 at 2PM.

Donnie Barnett will present a travelogue of his recent tours of the Northern Mojave, Colorado Plateau, and Great Basin.

Thew newsletter includes a primer on palms by Vicki Yuen.

Please bring plants for our raffle and consider a contribution of refreshments.

The Society's September meeting will be Sunday October 9 , 2011 @ 2:00PM in one of the upper meeting rooms of the Desert Living Center at the Springs Preserve. 333 S. Valley View Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89107. If we can manage it, we'll try to post more specific location information when it is made available to us. (There are half a dozen meeting rooms of this description.) Otherwise just show up and wander around. We'll find each other.

Our October presenter will be "friend of society" honorary member, Woody Minnich. He will be speaking of the flora and fauna of Peru. Notes and a biography are included in the October newsletter again ably put together by Donny Barnett.

Several fine images of cacti and the sky are included in our newsletter as are a flier for the cactus show, art fair, and sale at Moon-Sun Landscapes to be held in conjuction with us. It is October 15,16 at the Moon-Sun facility. The plant show rules and entry form are in the newsletter. We had maybe 30 plants entered in the show in the Spring ranging from novice to expert entries. Everyone is encouraged to enter a plant or three. Tips for preparing your plant are included in the newsletter -- and as Joey Betzler, frequent judge and show coordinator says: "Bring it as long as it is pest free and not leaking odd fluids.". I think i heard him say that anyway.

The website editor's pithyness managed to generate an external comment last month but I'm feeling sadly lacking in pithiness (which spelling is it?) this month. So, Viki has been working too hard on brownies in the last few meetings, hows about someone bringing some refreshments so that Bob Furtek will show up? Apparently the Orchid society has better food than us -- oh the humanity!

Greg Starr from Tuscon, Arizona will present a talk on Agave and Ferocacti and other succulents found on the Baja peninsula at the meeting. Plants and perhaps a few copies of Cool Plants for Hot Gardens, authored by Mr. Starr will be available. Our regionally famous plant raffle will likely be overseen by MC Sam Valenti.

An ambitious September newsletter has been posted, including notes on hunting the wily Agave Utahensis, a description of Agave neomexicana, some stunning Rick Holmes photography, and nursery sourcing info.

Society friend Woody Minnich is our October speaker so we're on a minor roll here. Bring a friend, a plant, or a plant friend -- minimally bring yourself.

August 2011 Meeting

The Society's August meeting will be Sunday August 14, 2011 @ 2:00PM in one of the upper meeting rooms of the Desert Living Center at the Springs Preserve. 333 S. Valley View Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89107.

Pete Duncombe, the Curator of Gardens at the Springs Preserve, will describe the programatic changes at the Preserve that have occurred this year.

The August newsletter contains details and an article on Echinocactus polycephalus.

Please note also that Greg Starr, an agave expert from Tuscon, will be our presenter on September 11.

CSSSN July Meeting

We will meet Sunday July 10 @ 2:00PM, Up stairs in or around the Desert Living Center of the Las Vegas Springs Preserve. The Springs will have signs near the entrance directing you to the correct location.

Donnie Barnett will give a presentation on a collection of plants of the Mojave Desert.

June Meeting

We will meet Sunday June 12 @ 2:00PM, Upper Meeting Room of the Desert Living Center.

Speakers will be Paula Garrett and friend Margie. They will speak about creating a certified wildlife habitat in your backyard.

May Meeting

Our next meeting will be May 15, 2011 at 2PM at The Las Vegas Springs Preserve. This is in the upper meeting room of the Desert Living Center at the Springs.

The presenter for May will be Donnie Barnett: The Politics of Prickly Pear Fighting -- all about Opuntias.
